Music and Dance: Finding Voices, Building Confidence

For many children who come to Friends of Hope, music and dance are more than just creative expressions; they are forms of healing. Whether it is the beat of the drums, the melody of a song, or the movement of dance, these artistic outlets provide a sense of joy and freedom. Anna, who once found her own escape in music, teaches children to play instruments, compose songs, and express themselves through dance.

Besides just being a form of expression and healing, dance and music also help to build a child's esteem and confidence, as they have a sense of worth and belonging. This is often seen when mastering a dance move or learning a new musical skill boosts a child's confidence. Performance-based activities also teach them how to handle nerves and take pride in their accomplishments.

Music, with its rhythms and melodies, can enhance language skills and comprehension. Dance, especially when telling a story or conveying an idea, supports non-verbal communication. This combination helps children, especially teenagers to find their voices and be authentic in the expression of their views, opinions and ideas. Additionally dance and music often expose children to various cultures and traditions, helping them develop a broader understanding of the world and fostering inclusivity however diverse our backgrounds are.

At friends of HOPE, we also use dance groups to incorporate aspects of social skills and teamwork, enforce mutual respect and discipline, emotional regulation and stress relief and overall relaxation.
